Blown Away

I'm totally blown away by the package I received from Jen for winning her blog contest.
Not only is it all wonderful stuff, it's PERSONALIZED STUFF!!! She put thought into this.
Everyone knows I'm all about being Irish and she included some Irish tea and a cute little Irish book. And, although there was no way she could have known this, Lemon Verbena is my favorite soap scent. I used to make soap and that was my biggest seller and my favorite scent and I haven't had any of it since. (it makes your bathroom smell wonderful) The stitch and bitch journal is really cool and has a gauge thingy which means I can now stop going to the computer every time I have a question about gauge. And, of course, she is enticing me to knit lace with that beautiful skein of yarn. I really do want to do some kind of a beginner lace project after I get something finished for Colin. So, thank you Jen! What a great package. And what a great day to receive it. Up until I got home, I was having a pretty lousy day (as predicted!)
















Here is the new Erin Bag I started last night. If you click on it you should be able to see the little pastel specks in it. It's a pretty cotton/acrylic blend from Kraemer. (check those yarns out... they're great and good for Pennsylvania's economy too!) This one will be for my nephew's wife who let it be known that she was just about the only family member who didn't have one. (well, actually, I don't have one!!) Anyhow, she is just the sweetest girl and I'm happy to make this one for her. She asked Cate to do it but I'm a little quicker on the needles than she is at this point. Cate signs her lease in Butler tomorrow. So look out Butler knitters!!! She'll be there in August and I'll leave the increase and decrease lessons to you! (ha ha)

Pea Pod Update

Thank you to Vicki and Yvonne for informing me as to the error in the original pattern. And, yes, I was using the one with errors. So, I just decided to cut my losses and start over with the new pattern. But not any time soon, mind you. I've had about enough of this for now. It's funny with this sweater... I usually do not care about a challenge. If something is challenging me, I'll give it up in a heart beat. I normally just don't care and I'm happy to move on to something else. This sweater is different for some reason. I want to beat this sweater. Eventually...

Today is going to be a crappy day. I changed clothes 3 times this morning and sometimes you just know, right off the bat, that it's going to be a crappy day. I hate what I have on and when that happens, you just know. What is it about clothes? If you put something on in the morning that you love, you feel like you can conquer the world. If you end up settling for blah, it's for sure going to be a yucky day. Then, once I got to work, after the half hour long fashion show for self, I realized I didn't eat breakfast. I never do that. Ever. So I guess I'll sneak out of here and grab something before the stomach growling wakes up the kid who's supposed to be working in the next office.

But the question of the day is.... what to knit now that Pea Pod is frogged? I may have to do another Erin Bag while I decide.

I found these this morning while I was walking devil dog. They are on the lawn of our church. And speaking of devil dog, she was particularly bad this morning. It was clear when we left the house that her mission today was to pull my arm out of it's socket. She's never good, but today, for some reason, she was a lunatic. And of course it didn't help that every rabbit in Blair County decided to cross our path. Not to mention the two people who showed up for 8:00am Mass at the church at 7:00am. They obviously had some serious praying to do and didn't realize that they were going to throw the dog into a frenzied "i want to jump all over you" state of distraction. We walk at 7:00am for a reason people! This dog is stronger than me. Steer clear of us if you know what's good for you. The good news is that she is going home this weekend. I'm too old for that crazy dog.

In office news, our AC was broken all last week and we drip dried on the way home every day. We can't open windows here. So yesterday they fixed it. We were all very pleased. Today you can see your breath in here. My teeth are chattering. I knew there was a reason I'm knitting wool socks in the summer. Geesh. Can't win.

Have I Mentioned That Lace Is Going To Be The Death Of Me?????

Behold, Pea Pod. Once again, I am stuck. There is a 16 stitch panel of lace that I cannot, for the life of me, get through correctly. I can never tell where to start the series of stitches because every row has a different number of stitches than the last time. I can't grasp the concept and I can't "read" the knitting. I understand the stitches. I know what I'm supposed to do. I just can't tell where to start it. It's so hard to explain. My brain is so funky when it comes to this. It has to be some form of learning disability... spacial, reasoning, ... something. I don't know. It's very frustrating.

I can tell it isn't going to be too long before I scrap this project. Life's short. Could be time to move on.

That candy bar was awesome. New Castle certainly has chocolate down to a delicious science.

Pea Pod from Hell

I thought it was just me with this pattern. Sometimes things are just simply above your skill level. So when I failed for the 8th time to make any type of progress on this, I took it to the LYS for help. Now she is good. And she did figure it out. But I have to say it shouldn't have been as difficult as it was to do it. In the end it was....... well, it has to be this way because there is just no other way it would work. I guess I just don't understand why so much stuff in knittng patterns is unwritten and you are left to beat your head against the wall to figure it out. And, to tell the truth, we still don't know if the fix we came up with is going to work in the end. If I had chosen to make the smallest size, everything would have been fine. But there is no good explanation for what you do with the extra stitches for the larger size as they do not fit into the charted pattern work. So I finally get the waist band worked out after many, many trial and errors, only to get home and get stuck on the lace inset. So I'm stalled again until I can make it to the LYS again.
Believe me, normally I would have given up on this by now. But my daughter really wants this for Colin. Ugh.

I'm half way finished with the second STR sock. I spent the entire day knitting yesterday instead of doing the things I should have been doing. But I enjoyed it. I spent WAY too much $$$ at the LYS on Saturday too. I finally got a set of Denise needles. I've been wanting them for a long time. I got some discontinued EMU DK in navy (for a future Colin project) and some white superwash sock yarn to try my hand at dying. I got a little somethin somethin for my "other" secret pal too. So, all in all, I was totally out of control. Sometimes a knitter's just gotta do what a knitter's gotta do.

The Dingle Peninsula is on the west coast of Ireland. I am about the furthest thing from a world traveler there could be, but this is one thing I did happen to experience. I can't imagine there is more beautiful scenery anywhere on earth. When you think about it, you just want to go back. Like, tomorrow.

Things I Don't Understand

I've been doing a lot of driving lately and these are the things I think about in the car. I used to blast music but I'm sick of all my music so now I just drive and think. About this kind of stuff.

*Mullets.... just... why?

*The media's fascination with Britney Spears. She was a pop singer. She's not now. Let it die. Please.

*Poor hygiene. Soap is cheap.

*bungee jumping and sky diving

*western style clothing (unless you live in Montana, of course, or are going to a costume party)

* things made with yarn and plastic canvas

* child abuse. how? really, how?

*chubby teenage girls with half shirts and their guts hanging out over their jeans

*why people get dogs and keep them chained outside

*why the Brits put up with financing the monarchy. hello???

*why teenagers would rather get soaked than carry an umbrella

*why dogs have to sniff for a half hour before they find the right spot. (ok, I know there is some cockamamy reason for this but I don't care, it's still frustrating as hell)

*people passing you driving 90 miles an hour and then turning right 2 blocks from where they did it.

*people who get in an empty church pew and sit on the very end.... and then get all bent out of shape when you ask them to move over (this is my #1 pet peeve)

*people who don't think you're quite good enough for them to acknowledge you in the supermarket even though they know who you are. (don't even get me started on this one)

* why we can't celebrate Christmas anymore

*why we can't celebrate Halloween anymore

*why the Brits get so many "bank holidays" and we don't

*why health insurance sucks and gets suckier every year

*why everything that tastes wonderful is bad for you

*why some people can eat anything they want and not gain an ounce

*why p eople who need health insurance can't get it and the people who don't can (yes, I know everyone needs it, but I also know that people who really need it... like asthmatic 20 year olds, CANNOT get it.. So, yeah, let's just put them on the welfare rolls )

*terrorism. I don't understand hate of that magnitude. At all.

*all the hubbub about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Who cares. She eats men up and spits them out and he'll get expectorated too before too long.

*what happened in New Orleans last summer. I don't understand why those people were not helped for such a long time. It could not have been that difficult.

Finally a new camera

And, yes, I purchased the extended warranty WHICH MAKES ME TOTALLY CRAZY BECAUSE IF YOU SPEND THIS MUCH MONEY ON SOMETHING THEY SHOULD WARRANT IT WITHOUT HAVING TO SPEND AN ADDITIONAL ARM AND LEG.

Ok. I got that out of my system.

Not much knitting news. I did work a little on the second koigu baby sock. I could have that finished tonight if I find time to knit. They are girlie. There are no girl babies in my immediate future. I guess they will go in the FO tupperware bin to be gifted later.

Here are some photos of Annapolis. These were taken with my Minolta 35mm on automatic. I'd have been better off setting it manually. I think they are dark. Did I tell you that my nephew and his wife were in Annapolis the same weekend and stayed in the same hotel? We never saw them and didn't know they were there. We missed them in the restaurant on Sunday morning by a half hour. It truly is a small world. Good thing I was there with my husband. (ha ha) But it does crack me up when people think they can get away with stuff like that. You're never safe!!! :-)

Digital Cameras... can't live with em, can't live without em

I've been using my daughter's old fuji digital camera for the last few months after my fuji went south. Today, her's died too. Left without any options, I finally purchased a new Canon Powershot which I will pick up at Circuit City at noon. I always liked the fujis until I discovered that they have customer service from hell. So no more fuji anything for me. Ever. Don't buy Fuji. Trust me on this.

I have absolutely no knitting to report. I wish I did. I've been trying to find the time to stop at the LYS for a week now and I just can't seem to get there. Work is hectic, home is hectic, life is hectic.

I need a vacation.

Knitting for Sanity

Some people knit for charity. Over the weekend I knitted for sanity. And my STR sock got completed because of it.
















We won't go completely into why I was going insane but I will say that it had to with a doo doo deposit of the canine variety that took place for about the 19th time in my spare bedroom. And let me tell you, when I get mad, I take it out on everyone. So, in an effort to save Father's Day from the wrath of Mom, I put Beethovan on and settled in the chair with the sock and began the cool down process. The colors in this photo are not true but you get the idea. It's definitely a cool sock that will be very toasty on the foot when the weather chills down... which is NOT today.

I started the other koigu baby sock when I completed this one. There is no rhyme or reason for my knitting. I was going to start Colin's sweater but I couldn't find my # 3 needles. So it's off to the LYS today at lunch time.

If anyone decides to make that little Baby Pea Pod sweater shown in the newest Interweave Knits, let me know. I still can't get the pattern in the ribbing. I've decided to do a Sirdar pattern for Colin until I can get that one figured out. Then I'm going to do something for him from here:

So, yes, they pooled big time. But I really like them this way. Is that weird? I guess it is.
































ZYX PHOTO FRIDAY FEATURING THE LETTER "E"

E is for Earl Grey. I'm a big time coffee drinker. I need coffee to get going in the morning. But usually around mid-morning, only during cold weather, I want a cup of tea and it has to be this tea. I love the smell and the taste.

Today will be a busy day. I have to tell a guy his house is full of radon and he needs to fix it to sell it. Never pleasant. Charlotte retired and I have to go to a closing for her. And I list a photography studio later in the day. Run, run, run.

We had a little retirement party for Charlotte last night at Red Lobster. I think she enjoyed it. I wish I would have had time to make her another pair of socks. She loves those socks.

We got the granddog back from the kennel last night after the fiasco of two weeks ago. I'm hoping that this next run with her turns out better than the last one. It won't be long now until she can go home. Hopefully the excavator shows up today to fill in the mud pit which was once a swimming pool. He's been saying "yeah, I'll be there tomorrow" for two months now. The dog needs a yard and I need the dog to be in the yard. They had her shaved for summer at the kennel and she looks so funny. She's a golden retriever and now she sort of looks like a vizsla which is weird. I bet she feels better though.

I intend to hit some yard sales tomorrow. Something I've never done before ever. I'm hoping to score some things for Catie's apartment. And if I found a decent stroller that wouldn't be so bad either.

Cate's Erin Bag

Well she thought she was the bomb this morning walking out the door with this. It turned out so cute. Wrapping the yarn around bamboo handles isn't easy. There is no way to do it smoothly but it still looks ok. Nice job Cate!

The STR socks are pooling insanely (photo tomorrow hopefully). It looks like I'm knitting socks with two different balls of yarn. But I still love them. Cold feet will not defeat me this coming winter!! I'll be so prepared!

Work is going to SO suck today. I have to accompany the sheriff to an eviction for a listing I'm getting through a bank foreclosure. Directly following that, I'll be attend a closing where the buyer and seller are at odds, not to mention the two sellers are at odds with each other!

It's going to be a wine night. I think a nice merlot. Yeah. That's the ticket.

I watched the little prince last night while everyone went to the Curve game so no knitting was accomplished. Lots of walking with the stroller did get accomplished so that's good... excercise.... which is rare for me.

Maybe I'll get Cate's Erin Bag finished tonight.

The verdict is in.....

I like Socks That Rock yarn much better than Koigu.
I'm not saying that it's better. I'm just saying that I like it better.
It's not as soft as koigu therefore it feels sturdier and warmer to me.
It appears to be a thicker sock than the koigu and I think it will wear
better. And it's gorgeous. Every colorway is gorgeous. Those people
really know what they're doing.

Cate's Erin Bag is almost finished. I'll sew it up tonight. I know as soon as I see it finished I'm going to want one for myself.

In other news, I'm getting the urge to do something I haven't done for a long, long time. And if I start, I know there is no turning back and it will take time away from knitting. I want to sew again. I think it's Colin's fault. I had so much fun sewing for my kids when they were little. I honestly don't know where my sewing machine is. I haven't seen it since we moved in 1992. Maybe a new sewing machine is in order?? Hmmn. I also have a dress in mind that I can't find anywhere. But I'm sure I could find a pattern for it. This isn't good. Not. Good.

Interstate Knitting

The trip to Annapolis afforded lots of knitting time in the car and I got the Koigu shorties finished. Please excuse my fake tan orange colored legs. Ugh. Nothing works as far as fake tanning products go. For a while I was liking L'Oriel Sublime Bronze tanning towelettes but I'm fed up with them now too. I think that spray tanning works best but who has time for that? Not me.

My "County Clare" Socks That Rock yarn came last week. The greens are so pretty. I'll make Kelly's christmas socks with this.
















And speaking of STR, I started a pair of socks last night with the STR yarn Laurie sent me. I really needed to finish the other koigu baby sock but I just had to knit with the STR first. I'm as scattered with my knitting as I am with everything else.

Annapolis

We got back from Annapolis around noon. Why so early you ask? Why so early indeed. You see, when you travel with my husband, on the day you are supposed to leave, from no matter how far away you are, you get up at the a-- crack of dawn, eat a breakfast that would clog the arteries of the entire naval fleet, and you go home. God forbid the laundry should wait a few more hours. Why are men like that? What is their hurry to get home? My friends husbands do it too. I don't understand why you wouldn't try to get just a little more bang for your buck. If I had been there alone, or with a girlfriend, we'd be pulling out of there around 3 or 4pm. Men!

We had dinner here.... traditional Irish food. Great, great food, and very friendly service. It was like being in Ireland all over again.
















As we were walking around, I wondered what year the academy began. In my mind, I picked the date 1846. A total guess. Then we came across this entrance. I was only one year off. Weird.















This is Main Street in Annapolis. There are lots of cute stores and restaurants and taverns. It's a beautiful, historic city. Right up around the corner from here is the state capitol building and the governor's mansion. Very impressive buildings. Go see it!

My pictures from my 35mm camera will be so much better than these. I had to lighten these so they lost some of the crispness. I SO need a new digital!

Oh, there WAS knitting! But for some reason blogger won't load that photo. Maybe tomorrow.

"F" is for Family and Friends















Where would we be without them? Last Saturday my sister and her family threw a huge party to celebrate family and friends. In two years they gained a son-in-law, a daughter-in-law and three grandchildren! So they thought it was time for all their friends to meet all the new additions. Here is my son Michael with his new nephew Colin at the party. It truly was a fantastic party. And family and friends truly are worth celebrating.

T.G.I.F.

It has been a long week. Tomorrow we're going to Annapolis for just a very brief getaway. In case you have never been there, it's a neat place to visit. They have a great downtown waterfront and really nice downtown shopping. Not to mention really cute Midshipmen...CATE.

Anyhow on to knitting news.
















This is the STR yarn that Laurie sent me. Doesn't it look cool wound?? I can't wait to dig into this. I think I will use this to knit my first pair of socks from the sock book I bought at Barnes and Noble a few months ago. I can't even remember the name of it now... but it will come to me.

Cute Stuff

Here's my mother with her two newest great-grandchildren, Colin and Giorgio. She pretty much has the touch because they're both sound asleep. Giorgio is visiting this week from London. He's a fussy butt and my niece is handling it like an old pro. She won't know how to act if the next one is an easy baby.

In knitting news I wound the Socks That Rock that Laurie sent me last night and the colors in the ball are so awesome. It always amazes me how different the colors in the skein look when it's wound. I worked a few hours on the second Koigu sock. After handling both yarns for quite a while last night.... I think I might lean toward the STR yarn over the Koigu.

I'm still undecided about what to do with the yarn for my sister. I haven't added to the rib scarf because I don't know if that is what I really want to do with it. I think I might inquire and see if they have any more of it so I could make a larger project.

I found out a few days ago that we are going back to Kiawah in October.
Oh yeah. Happy Holly. Very Happy Holly.

Hump Day

It's Wednesday and it feels like Wednesday. Actually what it feels like is freezing in my office. I have a love/hate relationship with air conditioning. I feel like getting my little space heater out and plugging it in. Somehow I don't think that would go over very well. Anyhow there is knitting news. I have one adult koigu sock finished and one baby sock. I started the other adult sock. This adult sock looks a little funky in the photo but it actually looks okay in real life!
















But the really exciting knitting news is this:
















Laurie sent me this Socks That Rock yarn as a thank you for being her Secret Pal. Who does stuff like that??? I feel like I'm doing good when I remember to send a thank you card. She is SO sweet! I can't wait to knit with this.

I missed knitting night but we did have a beautiful evening HERE last night. This could be the premiere fishing club in the world. We don't fish but the owners are friends and they threw a great party yesterday. How do you join?? You don't. Unless your last name is Rockefeller or something like that. But believe me, if you had the money, it would be worth every penny. The place is fabulous.

So Cate is now officially a "Pigger". What's a "Pigger" you ask?? An employee of the New Pig Corporation. She started her summer job there this week. She'll be working with her cousin so I'm sure they will have a fun summer.
















Oh Cate.... give it up. You can never be like her.

Lady Eleanor

Monday Monday... can't trust that day

I knew yesterday was going to be a bad day. On a scale of 1 to 10 it was definitely a 2. There was a moment, when I sold my own listing, that it was a 10. But that was so short lived. That moment of brightness, while it still remains in tact and bright, was quickly dulled when I got home. But, back to the beginning. We were all getting ready for work when Catie stopped in her tracks at the foot of the stairs and announced there was a insect of gargantuan proportions on the step. The look of horror on her face convinced me that I did NOT want to have to see it. I was picturing something like you would see on a National Geographic special on TV. Like something you find in a rain forrest or in Africa or, um... Florida. I couldn't decide whether to yell for my husband to come take care of it or just handle it. I walked over to the stairs. I looked down. It was what we refer to as a "thousand legger" and it was about an inch long. Scary? Yes. To our standards. But not have a coronary, turn white and pass out scary. And this kid is living on her own next semester???? She better have Orkin on speed dial. That was the beginning of the day. Later, after work, I arrived home to find out that Older daughter's golden retriever, who is in our care temporarily, has gone missing.... for the third time in two months. And, yes, this is getting old. I then procede to chase her through the neighborhood. Just as I go to grab her on several occasions, she bolts. I get back in my car and head in the direction she is going. I see her rolling in something. Really rolling in something. Dead animal maybe? Dead animal, yes. And she is so enjoying it so much that she doesn't see me coming. I grab her, and walk three blocks home with her because I will not put her in the car. I get home, call the kennel, and all hell breaks lose. But we won't go there. We definitely will not go there. Then, this morning, I realize in all the commotion, I never went back to get my car. My cell phone was in there and I missed three important business calls. It can only get better today, right?

On to knitting. Presenting Lady Eleanor. There were a few more cute photos, but blogger won't let me load them. Maybe later....

Pretty Yarn

This yarn jumped right out at me at Maryland Sheep and Wool. It has my sister's name all over it. These are definitely her colors. I was a little disappointed in the number of knots I found in it while winding it but it's so beautiful..In trying to decide what to do with it, I finally settled on a simple ribbed scarf. It will be great mindless knitting. I had more of a "wrap" thing in mind but every pattern I found called for more yarn than I have. Of course I'm so fickle that I could rip this out tonight and start something else with it before I get too far. I didn't want anything with too much of a pattern because that would defeat showing off the colors. I'm open to suggestions. There are 521 yards of it. It seems to be between a DK and worsted weight.

I really wanted to start the Baby Pea Pod sweater last night but I'm still stuck on that pattern. I worked on that chart a little bit over the weekend but still can't get it. I was looking forward to taking it to knitting night tomorrow to get some help but I found out over the weekend that I can't go because of a dinner I have to go to.

I forgot the photos of Lady Eleanor. I'll try to remember to do that tonight. I definitely want to knit another one of those for myself. I was thinking last night how gorgeous it would have been in the yarn above. I think I'll make that my goal for Maryland Sheep and Wool next year.... find some great yarn for my Lady Eleanor.

GRANDMA

Butler, Slippery Rock, and Yummy Mexican Food!

Not much knitting to report but we did cram a lot of stuff into the last few days. Cate and I went apartment hunting in Butler and Slippery Rock and met Cheryl and Yvonne for lunch at a great Mexican restaurant in Butler called Gutierrez (I think that's what it's called) . The food was great and it was fun to see Yvonne and Cheryl again. Cheryl drove over an hour just to meet us for lunch. That's so nice! Yvonne brought her socks that rock yarn for me to pet. (ha ha) It is almost identical to Koigu. After lunch Cate found a cute apartment in Butler that will be perfect for her.

Lady Eleanor is blocked. I unpinned it yesterday afternoon. The dilemma now is to fringe or not to fringe. I asked my mother what she wanted and she couldn't decide either. I guess I could always put it on and if she doesn't like it, take it off. Sounds reasonable. Photos on that tomorrow.

I did have enough Koigu left on the skein to do a baby sock and it's almost finished. I was going to give them to our secretary but the more I look at that yarn, the more I think I wouldn't wear those on a boy (and that's what she's having) so I think I'll give them to Corie and keep the shortie socks for myself. (c'mon... what were the chances that I was really going to give my first Koigu socks away?? slim and none.)

Crazy Day

I have so much to cram into one day that I don't know where to begin. So, since I'm so undecided, I'm going to blog instead of digging into the important stuff. I totally forgot that I invited a friend for lunch (for doing me a huge favor) and I am dressed way too far down for that restaurant. So, I will have to stop at the house and put something more presentable on before lunch. I had a suit in my hand this morning and decided not to wear it. Figures.

I ordered some "socks that rock" yarn yesterday in the colorway below. It's called "County Clare". How could I NOT buy that colorway??? I loved County Clare. I am not happy with the "socks that rock" people after the stunt they pulled at Maryland Sheep and Wool but I did want to compare this yarn with Koigu and I thought... what better time to try it than now? I think I will work with them both at the same time and decide which is better. Just for fun.





















I have one Koigu shorty sock almost finished. I don't think there is going to be enough left from that skein to make a baby sock which is a bummer. I'm going to try but I'm not optimistic.

Tomorrow is a trip to Slippery Rock to try to find Cate an apartment for next year. We're meeting up with Yvonne and (hopefully) Jane in Butler. If anyone else wants to do lunch, let us know! I don't get west very often!
