Catie's sophie bag.... one of my secret projects. I gave it to her yesterday at Slippery Rock. She knit this bag herself for the most part. She quit just after the thick white stripe. So I finished it and felted it. She was surprised.

I love this sweater. It's beyond my skills but someday... The interesting thing about this sweater is that when you google "interlocking cables" which is the name of the pattern, you will find posts ABOUT the sweater in knitting blogs, but you can't find anyone who actually MADE the sweater. One look at the pattern and you're screaming for your mother. That's how scary it is.
Another thing that scares me about this pattern is that I'm afraid it would be like the Debbie Bliss "Simply Marilyn" pattern. Simply Marilyn from Interweave Press I coveted this sweater for a long time. Then, I googled "Simply Marilyn" and found photos of the completed sweater in knitting blogs and they were horrendous. They DID NOT look like the sweater in the magazine.
So, I'm afraid that even if I did have the skill necessary for "Interlocking Cables", the finished product would be one of those ugly duckling second class "wannabees". Who knows? Hard to say.

It's Homecoming at Slippery Rock U. tomorrow. We will go to visit the lovely Cate. It is also my husband's alma mater so he will enjoy the football game. I will suffer the football game. It's almost impossible to get a good photo of a dark colored knit object. But here is the bag. It still needs lined and the side straps and buttons sewn on. I might have to make one of these for myself!

There was not one but THREE new knitting magazines on the newstand when I went to the store this evening. I usually find them a day or two after they've been put on the shelf. All I can say is that I'm glad I leafed (is that a word?) through them before just throwing them in my cart. I saw NADA. Not one thing that I would knit. Vogue was a true disappointment. Usually I want to make everything in Vogue. There was one maroon cabled shoulder thingy (maybe # 24 or 26?) that I liked but not enough to go to the trouble. I wouldn't know what I'd ever wear it with.
Then there was Better Homes and Gardens "Knit It" and Family Circle "Easy Knitting". I didn't see anything in those either. One of them had a big sock tutorial in it which would be great for new sock knitters. I have high hopes for "Interweave Knits" but I usually can't knit anything from that magazine anyhow.
The buttons came today from the "rip off" company. I can't believe I paid what I did for those things. But, having said that, they ARE perfect. That bag is going to be so cute when it's finished. The handles came too. They're fine. Not worth $20.00 but just what I needed for the purse.

on Clapotis. I worked on this last night while I sort of but not really watched the Steeler game. I just can't get into it like the rest of the family. I wish I could. I'd like to be as excited about it as they are. I'm not sure why I do get excited about it if they make the play-offs but can't get excited about it during the regular season. I'm just not into football.
I ordered some berocco suede for a special project to be named later... can't get into it now because of snoopy people here :-) But it's really really really CUTE!!!!! I know... what a tease!
Well, gotta run. I have to go tell people that their house isn't worth what they think it is. I always hate that. I hate to burst that delusional bubble. As much as I like this job, that's the one part I hate.
So I'm searching and searching for the perfect buttons for on the black felted bag. She said she wanted some great "funky" buttons on the bag. I googled the word "buttons" and the only type of buttons that came up were blog buttons and campaign buttons, etc. So I google "buttons" and "sewing" and the website that I posted previously came up (and you have to buy in bulk there folks, which I didn't realize before) and ...get this... THE RIP OFF COMPANY came up. The wooden handle rip off company has buttons too. And did I like the buttons at the rip off company??? Of course I did. Did I PURCHASE buttons from the rip off company? Of course I did. What can I say? They had THE buttons for the bag. And you're probably thinking... so Holly, how much did you pay at the rip off company for 4 buttons? I paid $15.00 for 4 buttons plus $5.00 shipping and handling. So now, I've paid $15.00 for the handles plus $5.00 shipping and $15.00 for the buttons plus $5.00 shipping totaling $40.00!!! Why didn't I just go out and buy her a Coach Bag or something???? :-) That's OK... she's worth every penny.

Don't you hate it when you spend about 1/2 hour on a post and then realize you posted it to the wrong blog??? My extended family is definitely NOT interested in my weekend knitting activities and I posted the darn thing on the family blog only to have to delete it and start over again here in the right spot. (I can just hear them all talking about Aunt Holly the nutball now)
So anyhow, I got the black bag felted over the weekend but that's about it. It's larger than I thought it was going to be but that's ok. It's still fine. I like how it turned out. The little strips are side straps. I'm looking for the right buttons for on the straps and I think I can find them here: http://www.jhbinternational.snapmonkey.net/page/page/1769499.htm I ordered black wooden handles from the "rip off" company. That's what I call them anyhow. Each handle was $7.49. I think spending $15.00 on handles is a little much. But that's just me. I refuse to use cheap plastic.
In huge personal knitting news, I found out today that my niece who THOUGHT she was having a girl (information received from a previous test) found out today that she is really having a BOY. The sonogram revealed that if it's a girl.... it's a girl with a big problem! Man, am I glad I didn't start knitting for that baby yet. There's nothing worse than a boy in pink!

I have none news. (my kids used to say this when they were very little) They would have none candy, or none money, or none friends to play with. Ah... memories. Anyhow, no knitting news other than I made progress on the black purse last night after my hair appointment. And, yes, I have a cool new "do". I couldn't take letting it grow another minute so I'm back to very short hair and I love it.
My boss got me a cool new printer/scanner/photo shop thingy yesterday. Just what I needed... another toy to distract me from doing my work. Of course I had to play with it all afternoon. Hopefully I got it out of my system.
So it's a rainy, dreary day in Central Pennsylvania today. I guess that's good because I have to spend the morning in school learning how to fill out the new state agreement of sale document to purchase property. When I got into real estate, the agreement of sale was one page with a separate mortgage addendum page. The new agreement of sale is 8 pages long. My how times have changed. Liability in this industry is off the chart. I know people who took the real estate classes and after listening to the instructors describe the liability issues decided it was not the job for them and never bothered to sit for the test. Probably a smart decision.
My little cable purse was a hit with my niece. She really likes it. She actually said that people stopped and asked her where she got it! Maybe I should quit work and knit little purses. I think I'll tell my husband that I'm going to do that. Right.
At the risk of ruining a surprise, this is what I worked on last night at knitting night. It's this:
My number 1 daughter, the lovely Kelly, saw this at "The Wool Gathering" shop in Kennett Square and expressed a desire to have it. I told her I wasn't into making purses anymore but I later called and got the pattern to make it for her for Christmas. I don't think she lurks here at all so I doubt that this is giving anything away. I do not like the plastic handles they show on this bag. I'm going to have to come up with something better than that. I can't believe they even put them there. Yuck. Way to ruin a good bag.
So we saw a needle felting demonstration last night. It's nothing more than pushing roving down into felted material with a special needle to make whatever design you want. You lay the fabric on a piece of foam rubber so the needle can push the roving through the fabric. It's kind of neat. The needle attaches the roving with little "barbs" so that it will never come loose. You can design free hand, or use stencils. I can see where it is something that could become addictive so I'm not going to go there. I have enough on my plate!

It took me forever to finish these... in between about 9 other projects. I love this pattern. It was written by the proprietor of my LYS. As you can see they are done in Sirdar Country Style DK weight. They will be warm. If anyone wants the pattern, let me know and I'll email you how to get it.
I'm a machine I tell ya.... a machine. I was more or less house confined yesterday and today because of a test I had to have at the hospital this morning (we won't go into that, trust me) and all I've done for two straight days is knit. I finished the grey socks, another project, and started another project. (These projects will remain nameless due to the lovely Cate lurking here from time to time and I don't want to ruin any surprises).

This would be adorable for my little grandniece in Colorado... the fair isle one. I love those colors. After reading the instructions, I realize that the instructions for that tassle tie-cord thing are not there and that's what makes the whole hat. Looking at it, I don't really understand how they did that.
Tomorrow night is knitting night. Someone is going to demonstrate needle felting...or something like that. I don't even know what that is. I guess I'll find out!!
No yarn. Drat. I know one thing... with all the thousands of people there, Pennsylvania spinners are missing a good bet. Surely enough people knit to make a weekend like that worthwhile. Actually the Bedford festival is TWO weekends.... the first and second weekend in October. The only two things I bought were Steeler dog collar sleeves for my dog and my "granddog". It was a nice afternoon anyhow. The town of Bedford is beautiful. Very historic... great architecture. Small town America at it's finest. They just need to do something about that website!
Truly I don't know what's wrong with this camera. I bought a new one to get clear photos and this is happening....blurry again. But you can still see the fabulous colors in this yarn. My secret pal was concerned I wouldn't like it because I don' t like purple. To me, these are wines, and pinks, and mauves....with only a tiny smidge of purple here and there. It's beautiful. And while I was contemplating a baby sweater, (it's exactly the colors I was looking for for the project) I keep looking at it and thinking .... socks for Holly...socks for Holly... I actually love wool socks and I don't care if I have to hand wash them in woolite. I live in drafty barn of a house and I need wool socks! Anyhow I love this yarn. I also took a photo of the cute knitting note cards she sent but it was too blurry to even try to post.

GRILLED SALMON RECIPES - ALDER OR CEDAR PLANK SALMON, SALMON STEAK, FISH & SEA
You soak the cedar boards in water for 24 hours, get them good and wet, then grill salmon on them and the salmon takes on the cedar flavor. It's delectable. Unfortunately, I forgot to soak them last night, and I can't eat anything tomorrow (test at hospital Monday morning) so I guess I'll save them for next week. Darn.

In my opinion, this website is really lame. This is one great fall foliage festival and the website makes it look really crappy. My husband would rather eat nails than go with me so I guess I'll go by myself.. which is just as well. No one will be pestering me to leave. I'm going to eat funnel cake and sausage sandwiches no one will be looking over my shoulder frowning at my lack of self control. Yay. I'm really really hoping that there may be some hand dyed yarns there. It's huge, and it's farm country so I think there's a good chance. I'll let you know.
In other knitting news, Clapotis III is boring me to death. I should have known. It's going to look great with my winter coat but I'm really wondering what I would wear it with just as a shawl. It will not be dressy in any way. It's like "Country Clapotis". I'm going to have to buy a wool skirt to match it. I picked it up to work on it the other night and noticed that my bamboo needle was cracked almost in half. Might someone have SAT ON IT??? Oh no, nobody got even close to it. Upon interrogation, it seems that nobody sat on the love seat where I had it spread out. So, I guess it's safe to say that the needle just broke in half all by itself. Amazing how that happens. Spontaneous needle bustage. :-) I guess it was my fault for letting it sit there unattended. When will I learn??
So I'm having the worst work week of the year, totally stressed to the MAX, and I come home to find the most gorgeous yarn of all time in my mail. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Pittsburgh Secret Pal. You MADE MY DAY!!! I will post photos tomorrow (the software doesn't work on my home computer) and show you this lovely hand dyed sport weight yarn that is going to be so perfect for my baby project. I wanted the perfect yarn and I GOT IT!!!!!!!! Can you tell I'm excited????
Ok...where was I when they were handing out normal jobs? Probably sitting in a corner feeding my face. In the real estate biz, every now and then you're going to have a bad one. People are emotional buying and selling houses. It's understandable. Sometimes people don't understand the program so it's your job to explain the program to them. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try to explain the program, people just don't get the program. Sometimes people think they can "change" the program simply because they want the program to work they way they think it should. Oh, don't get me wrong, I love this job. I like people. I even like a challenge from time to time. But two "bad" ones, two days in a row, STRESSES ME THE HECK OUT!! They normally don't come in pairs. They sneak up on you from time to time when you least expect it. They don't normally hit you over the head and hog-tie you leaving you to wonder if there is any possibility of light at the end of the tunnel. I think the only thing more stressful than dealing with people who are negotiating one of the biggest financial transactions of their lives would be life and death situations in medicine. I would not want to be in those shoes. People might get upset in my business but nobody dies.
I just want to win the lottery and knit. Come to think of it, I have some lottery tickets in my purse that I haven't checked yet. Who knows. I could be a winner.

Just so you know, I finally had to bite the bullet and change my setting for comments. I was getting unwanted comments (spam) with every post. I guess it only takes a second for someone to do the word verification so it isn't too much of an inconvenience, but isn't it too bad that you have to stoop to that?
As Bonnie stated in her comment, this IS some seriously beautiful yarn! I'm totally loving the colors. But what a mistake to turn this into Clapotis. You won't believe what I have to go through to get the runners to run.
I have to painstakingly untangle every "runner" stitch from the one above it. The fibers tangle like mad. But on the other hand, it's going to be gorgeous when it's finished so it will be worth the extra effort. As much fun as this pattern is, I'm pretty sure that 3 is enough.
I finally got this yesterday after waiting for it for a while:
After reading the instructions, it's pretty obvious that I could have and should have waited for it forever! It's way over my head. But it's so "me". It has little shells and starfish designs in it. If anyone should have a beach shawl, it should be me! And I do have the perfect yarn for it. I think it might be a "dead of winter" pattern for me with a lot of help from the LYS!!!
I'm so excited to have heard from my Pittsburgh Secret Pal the other day. I think she really is going to spoil me!!!
Made a whirlwind trip to New York City yesterday for my niece's wedding... got home late this afternoon. My niece Erin, who designed my little Finnegan Purl blog button, got married at The Mark hotel in Manhattan and while we hanging out outside waiting for the ceremony, a very important guest of the hotel arrived with his very extensive entourage and police escort. He got out of his car about 15 feet from me.
My friend Helen is going to DIE when she hears I saw him because she is into his teachings and wisdom. I, on the other hand, did not know much about him until I did some reading when I got home. I saw the Dalai Lama.
My daughter, Kelly, the history teacher, is also a little perturbed that she did not accompany us to the hotel early and missed the opportunity to see him.
The wedding was beautiful, the bride was gorgeous, the groom was handsome and a good time was had by all. We went to Ground Zero at 2:00am after the reception just to see it. My son said he wasn't leaving without seeing it so we hopped in a cab and went downtown. Needless to say, it's an emotional place.
And, yes, there is knitting news. I got about 6 hours worth of knitting completed on Clapostis III on the drive. The hand painted yarn from MS&W is nice to work with but it's a tiny bit fuzzy and it's hard to get those dropped stiches to run without the fibers getting tangled. I never gave that a thought. And it sheds a tiny bit too. I'm going to have to be careful what I wear it with.
I was just sitting here thinking, I'm so exhausted that half of this probably doesn't make any sense. I'll probably be editing it tomorrow!
Remember all that Christmas knitting I was supposed to be doing?? Well I started another Clapotis for MYSELF instead! I got this yarn at the Maryland Sheep and Wool festival and the fall colors just jumped out at me over the weekend and made me want to whip up another clapotis. This one will be far heavier than the others I made. This yarn is on the verge of bulky (although it says worsted) so I'm not quite sure how this is going to turn out. We'll see.
And the daily RANT is that I got a manicure and pedicure over the weekend that cost a small fortune and my 6 year old grand niece could have done a better job. You think I might be exaggerating? Nope, I'm not. It is pathetic. And why did I walk out of there without asking for my money back? Your guess is as good as mine. I need some assertiveness training and I need it soon. You would laugh if you saw my nails. Ugh!

Wow... how crazy is this?? I've always dreamed of going to Paris!
Wow.. the patterns in this book are ADORABLE. I can't wait to dig into some of these. Beautiful aran knits which I just love. I'm glad I came across it at my LYS the other day. I can envision myself using this book dozens of times in years to come.
The alpaca scarf is blocking. I'm disappointed with it. Love the pattern, love the yarn, but it's the wrong yarn for a scarf and it doesn't do that pattern justice. The scarf turned out limp and flimsy. I may keep it for myself because I'm not happy enough with it to give it as a gift. That yarn would have made a great, soft sweater. Live and learn.
Next up on the needles are another pair of socks for Miss Cate for Christmas. She picked some nice yarn out at the last sale at the LYS and I want to get them finished. I still have those grey socks on the needles (almost finished) so I'll get them done first.
I still haven't heard from my Pittsburgh Secret Pal so I have a feeling she/he may be traveling??

I wish I had some exciting knitting news to report but the truth is that I'm still plugging away at the alpaca scarf. It's almost finished and then I'll move on to the next Christmas project. I can't wait to get them all out of the way. (are you supposed to feel like that about Christmas gifts???) I think I have 4 pairs of socks to knit and a few felted purses and then I can move onto the baby things which I AM looking forward to. When all that is finished, I'll start a big sweater.
In non-knitting news I have to report that I am extremely PO'd at QVC. I KNEW there was a reason I never watch that or ordered anything from them EVER. I happened to be flipping through the channels one night a few weeks ago and caught a segment on a hair product that looked like it just might be the answer to my fine, thin hair so I got totally sucked in and ordered it. $40.00 later I am stuck with a product that is the same as spraying water into my hair. (think of the yarn I could have purchased with that money!) If anyone has any experience using Nick Chavez's "flocker" hair spray, and knows some magic trick to get it to actually do something with hair, let me know. And, yes, I know I should send it back but I didn't keep any of the paperwork or stuff that would make it easy to do so I'll just consider it a loss. So, enough about hair!
I think I'll stop at the LYS today and browse around a little for my secret Pittsburgh pal. I like her already!

1. Are you a yarn snob? Not really. Although I prefer to knit with natural fibers, I think there is a time and place for acrylics too. Some fun little projects call for acrylic yarn... like the little tiny Steeler hats I made last year.
2. Do you spin? Crochet? I do not and cannot spin. I can crochet but I prefer not to.
3. Do you have any allergies? Nope!
4. How long have you been knitting? Since elementary school and believe me, that was a LONG time ago. (but I didn't knit for years until just about a year ago.)
5. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list? Yes, I have an Amazon wishlist.
6. What is your favorite scent? Lavender in general and "Clean Cotton" if we're talking Yankee Candles.
7. Do you have a sweet tooth? Oh yeah. Everything and anything sweet is fine by me.
8. What other crafts or do-it-yourself things do you like to do? For years I made cold process soaps from scratch and I enjoyed it. But I got away from it when my mother got sick and I didn't have time to do it any more. Now I like to play with melt and pour soaps from time to time.
9. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer play MP3's? My computer cannot play MP3's. If my computer turns on in the morning it's a good day. I like almost anything BUT country. Soft rock, new age Celtic, classical, James Taylor, Sting, Dave Matthews, Nora Jones, oldies, almost anything.
10. Do you have a favorite color? I like blues and greens, earth tones... browns, tans. I do not like purple. I'll wear anything but purple or lavender.
11. What is your family situation? Dysfunctional. Oh, that's not what you meant, right? :-) Ok... I have a husband, one married daughter, one daughter in college living away and one son in college living at home. And a cute old dog.
12. What are your life's dreams? Wow... deep. I dream that when I die, I still have 3 happy, healthy adult children who are content with the paths they have chosen, are in love with the partners they have chosen, and have healthy, happy children of their own. That's all I want.
13. What is your favorite yarn to knit with? I really like Cascade 220. I like wool. I also like Kertzer Butterfly cotton, Lorna's Laces, Wool In The Woods, and Opal sock yarns.
14. What yarns do you not like to knit with? I do not like chenille and I don't like fun fur type stuff.
15. What are your current knitting obsessions? I obsess about "Rogue" and other sweaters with celtic braids, but they are on the back burner until I get some Christmas things and baby things finished.
16. What are your favorite items to knit? I still love sock knitting. It's fun to turn the heel. I think it's my favorite.
17. What are you knitting right now? A pair of socks in washable wool and a scarf in very nice, soft alpaca.
18. What do you think about ponchos? I prefer a rectangular wrap.
19. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? I'll only use circs when I have no choice and the pattern calls for it. I like straight needles.

21. Are you a sock knitter? Yes.
21. How did you learn to knit. My mother taught me the basics. She never really progressed beyond "straight" knitting like scarves and hats.
22. How old is your oldest unfinished object? This is a funny question. I finished an aran afghan for my mother last year that was 10 years old. Right now I have another one started that is about 1 year old.
23. What is your favorite animated character or animal/bird? I've always had a thing for koala bears.
24. What is your favorite holiday? Christmas. And I like Halloween too.
25. Is there anything that you collect? I used to collect snow globes. I still like them but they were taking over my house so I stopped. I like jewelry with a nautical theme like sailboat charms or sand dollars.
26. What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have? None. I buy them all though. My fear is that a magazine will appear on the newsstand and I won't have mine in the mail yet. That would make me unhappy and I know it happens.
27. Any books out there you are dying to get your hands on? I like any knitting for kids books.
I figure I'm going to be knitting for grandchildren before too long. (hopefully!)

Wow... great stuff! This (in my humble opinion) is one of the better ones.
Arisaig - I love this. But I wouldn't knit it because I wouldn't wear it. For some reason, wrap around things and I don't get along. I'm uncomfortable in them. It seems like excess baggage wrapped around me. But this is a beautiful design.
Samus - She had me in mind when she designed this...whoever SHE is. I'm such a sucker for those celtic braids. I love this sweater. Zippers scare the bejesus out of me though. I probably won't attempt to go here. (orange is SO in, isn't it??)
Cinxia - I'd make this. I'd wear this. It's just plain cute and simple.
Josephine - I really, really like this. But I wouldn't ever go to the trouble to knit it because you can buy a sweater so completely similar to this that it wouldn't be worth the trouble. (to me, that is) I have some sweaters purchased from QVC that are so similar. I understand that it's the sense of accomplishment for some knitters. But for me, my motivation is more along the lines of making something that you could never buy and this isn't it.
Blackberry - Adorable. I'd love to put this in my line up...someday.
Revolution - Downright awesome... for the right person. That person isn't me!
Lacey - So not me. But really cute.
Leaves in Relief - Beautiful. Lovely. Not on my list of future projects but I admire the skill involved in designing it.

Edgar - I wouldn't make edgar. I like a straight scarf. The word Edgar makes me think of the movie "Men in Black". I loved that movie.
Astrodome - like it. That would be a good project to re-acquaint myself with Fair Isle.
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is my charity of choice. My sister-in-law died from MS 6 years ago and her daughter (my niece) was diagnosed with the disease shortly before my sister-in-law died. MS is a disease of the central nervous system that attacks young adults in the prime of their lives. Teenagers are now being diagnosed at a higher rate than ever before. Central Pennsylvania has a higher population of people diagnosed with MS than most other parts of the country. Because this cause is so close to our hearts, my family does this:
Every year we hold a charity golf tournament at the Iron Masters Country Club in Roaring Spring, PA to benefit the MS Society. Due to the hard work of my brother and the wonderful sponsorship of my sister and brother-in-law's company, our tournament is the most successful charity golf tournament in the area. It continues to get bigger and better every year while other local tournaments are suffering the effects of the economy and dwindling participation. We are thankful for this.
Our tournament yesterday was blessed with fabulous weather, generous people, good food, and good fun!
Oh, did I mention that I get to sit on a par 3 hole all day long on one of Central PA's most beautiful golf courses and KNIT???

Last night was our knitting guild night. I missed the first hour and a half. So I missed the starting of the chemocaps that we are donating to charity... I'll have to start that on my own, and I missed a spinning exhibition by Shelley (who recently found my blog) and now I can't find HER website to show you all her beautiful yarns... but I will direct you there when I find it again. I am definitely going to order some of her hand spun bulky yarn to make another rolled collar and sleeve sweater for my daughter, Kelly. She had some gorgeous yarn.
Carla, our LYS proprietor, said that there is a request to donate yarn and needles to the displaced victims of Katrina. Apparently knitting is good for stress relief and there is a movement to send this stuff down there to keep the people's hand busy and their minds off their problems. It makes sense. It helps my stress level, that's for sure. And speaking of stress, I'd be knitting up a storm if I was at home today.
One more vehicle problem and I'm going to SCREAM. My car is in the shop for the second day in a row after spending a few hundred dollars on it yesterday. The engine light came on AGAIN this morning on my way to work. So now we are down to one borrowed car. One stolen, one broken... one manic woman trying to remain sane. And at the same time, I'm telling myself....with everything that is going on down south you should be ashamed of yourself for wallowing in self pity over a few car problems.
Back to knitting... I'm in LOVE with another pattern that I found online. And it's totally FREE.

This Plymouth Yarn Co. Peruvian Alpaca has been begging to be used. So it will be Billy's (my son-in-law's) Christmas scarf. The pattern is from this blog: The Yarnpath It's easy to memorize and the design is a good, masculine pattern. I think he'll like it. 
Then, I decided to use up the left over Samoa and Kertzer cottons that I had purchased for socks and the Arlene sweater. I'll wear this scarf as an accessory with turtlenecks this winter to brighten up my wardrobe! It's cute and colorful.
My Friday night plan was to clean house while my husband went to the high school football game. But as I was walking past the blocking cable purse I just happened to put my hand down on it and I noticed something that needed attention...CONSTRUCTION!!! It was DRY! So, goodbye housework, hello little purse. I forgot to take a photo of the lining but it turned out so cute. I do have an intended recipient for this little number but since she may be lurking here from time to time I'm going to keep it a surprise. 
So when I was finished with the purse, and felt like I was on a roll, I picked the sock back up and turned the heel on it. I love that process. People who don't knit socks don't know what they're missing. It's just plain fun.
Although the lovely Cate came home for the weekend for the Penn State game, she declined to model the big blue sweater (finally finished) and told me that she would take the photo of me in the sweater. Apparently she can't be photographed unless she is totally camera ready with make-up and hair done to perfection. So, anyhow, here's the sweater... notice the bright blue on the sleeve. I don't care. It's warm and cozy and will be great for the winter. And, in truth, it's not quite as noticable in real light as it is in this flash photo.
I thought I was over it. I tried to forget about it. But every day I see the yarn. I search for easier patterns for a first lace project. But I just keep coming back to this.
It haunts me.
Maybe I could figure out a way to make the pattern easier for my ADD brain. I don't know... but I SO want that wrap!!!

Do you see anything wrong with this picture? I obviously didn't understand when I purchased them that they came individually and not in sets. So I need another round handle and another oval handle to complete a purse. And at $6.95 EACH might I say that it wasn't such a great deal. For some reason I just think that $13.90 plus shipping and handling is a lot for two small wooden rings. They ARE nice quality but I just think I can do better than that elsewhere.
In other knitting news, I have Richard's (my boss) scarf almost complete in Debbie Bliss's Cashmerino Aran. One Christmas gift down.
Sad.....
In watching the news this morning I am in shock over what is happening in New Orleans. Shock and disbelief. I'm going to stop here and not go into a political rant but what good is sending money if no one is going to use it to help those people?
It may look like a scarf, but it will be a clutch bag after it's blocked and sewn. I found a great place to buy wooden handles online.

Funny story regarding Clapotis II..... When we were at the beach, I wore my clapotis to dinner and when we were walking back to our rooms my sister said, "I just love that shawl. If I paid you, would you make me one?" As it happened, I took along the clapotis that I made for her birthday and I was going to give it to her a few days later. After she said that, I couldn't wait and I had to give it to her that evening. Boy was she surprised! I think she really liked it. I'm glad I got it finished.
I'm not sure what happened to this photo or why it's so blurry but hopefully you can see I made good progress on the sock at Kiawah. I didn't have much time to knit but I got some in between the beach and dinner one evening. Kiawah is gorgeous. And The Sanctuary is awesome. But it's back to reality for me!
Dusty blue on the left vs. brighter blue on the right. This is the how the sweater is getting finished. I'd say without actually measuring there is about 5 or 6 inches with the brighter yarn on the sleeve. I think if I only wear it at night I'll be fine. :-)

Finished except for sewing up the seams. It's a perfect fit and it will be sooooo warm! 100% wool. I love it. I noticed that in bright light the different color blue on the sleeve bottom is noticeable but in regular light you really can't see it. I don't care. I'm just glad it's finished. And how much of the original blue did I have left over when I finished the roll neck? See for yourself: 
In a perfect world, that neck would have had a few more rows on it but I'll take what I can get without using the brighter blue right at eye level. That would stand out like a sore thumb. It's doable the way it is I think. I was VERY lucky here.
Socks and scarves.... here I come!! I have sock yarn out the waazuu and I'm diggin in!
And once again the lovely Cate agreeing to model the (finally) finished Clapotis II. I worked some magic on the "flaw" and it is no longer an issue so it will go to my sister for her birthday on the 28th. I just love it but I'm glad it's finished.
I worked on the the "big blue" monstrosity sweater last night after I got the clapotis finished. I finished the sleeve in the brighter Cascade 220 that my Seattle friend was kind enough to send. To me it's very noticeable but it might not be so apparent to other people. The good thing is that it is two yarns held together and the other one is the same. Tonight I will finish the rolled neck with what I hope is enough left over of the original blue. I just have to pray that there is enough because I really don't want to have to use that brighter blue around the neck. I think that we can safely say that by this time, if I was going to find the Cascade 220 I needed, I would have. It's just not out there. I exhausted every avenue and I'm just tired of looking at an unfinished sweater.
I also took stock of my stash last night. While I KNOW it's not as bad as some, it's pretty bad. I will dig into this stuff now to finished up some Christmas gifts and then concentrate on some baby stuff. I've got babies (of nieces) coming in January and February. One is a girl. YAY. So much easier to knit for girls. After babies..... ROGUE!!
I called Ireland this morning to order the other two skeins of yarn I will need to complete Rogue. knit this cabled hooded pullover :: rogue :: the girl from auntie I got a little old man on the phone with a decidedly yiddish accent with just a hint of brogue. Geez, that was a first! He was just the cutest thing. An Irish Jewish Elderly MAN selling yarn in an Irish yarn shop. I think he's one of a kind!
Of course it will be a hundred years before I attempt to start that project with everything else I have to do before that. But I'm still excited about it. It will have a special meaning since my daughter, who doesn't knit, bought the yarn for me in Ireland. Speaking of her, it hasn't been a good week for the O'Connors.... she lost ALL of her digital photos from Ireland when her computer hard drive crashed last week. She is going to try to have them recovered by someone who specializes in that so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for her. She called me crying when it happened. And THAT is why I sent all my digital photos to snapfish.com last week and had them put on CD's. (I don't have a burner) At least I feel safer about that now.
On the stolen vehicle front, we heard that two other vehicles were taken in our little town in the last month as well. Both in broad daylight and at lunchtime. I think we have a thief stealing cars on his lunch hour! None of the other ones have turned up either so I guess we better get car shopping and in a hurry.
I'm going to stop at the yarn shop today to pay my yearly "KnitKnuts" dues. (our little group)
If I was smart I'd just mail it in. God knows what all I'll buy while I'm there that I DO NOT NEED. :-)
Well I know from the sound of it you would figure it has some ethnic meaning, however, we just had a little fun day appreciating the dog.... whose name is Irish. My daughter said, "Mom, Irish is 9 years old and we never even celebrated her birthday once." This is true. So, we devoted a day to spoiling the dog a few Sundays ago. And since there is no knitting news to speak of, I'm subjecting you to this. She got new toys, doggie ice cream, and a trip to the park. The whole thing was so ridiculous that I didn't even have any trouble getting grown kids, spouses, and significant others to appear. I think they came just to find out if I was nuts enough to actually do it. But they got a great brunch out of it afterwards.
I said there was no knitting news, but actually there is. I screwed up Clapotis II big time over the weekend. It's funny. I never had one minutes problem with it the first time around but over the weekend I found myself one stitch off on a row. Do you think I could find the problem? No. So, I did what any novice knitter would do. Whatever I felt like doing at the time. And what happened when I dropped the next stitch? Well, it ran down the piece alright. And the whole thing started to unravel at the edge. Obviously it was not a stitch that was supposed to be dropped. So, I stopped the bleeding at the bottom with a slip stitch to hold the thing together and I think from here on in it will be okay. I dropped the next stitch and it was successful. So, now I think that I will keep this one too because it is "flawed". I can wear it but I wouldn't want to give it as a gift.
And in case you were wondering, our van has not been found which really bites. I keep expecting to wake up and find it sitting outside the house, returned by a remorseful individual who saw the error of his ways and wanted to repent and beg forgiveness. Yeah. Right.
Anyhow...this is what it looks like. You have to wonder what the attraction was.
I'll start this story by telling you that I live in Hollidaysburg, PA which is the county seat of Blair County. It is a picturesque, historic little town. Crime is low. Sure, things happen here as in every community in the country but real crime is pretty rare.
I live on a tree lined street beside a big stone church in an area that can boast of few problems at any given time. I actually live in the historic district with a plaque on my house that is supposed to mean that the house is somewhat special but what it really means is that we can't do the improvements we'd like to due to a bunch of bleeding heart preservationists wh0 have a stroke everytime we mention the words "vinyl siding".
Anyhow, our car was stolen on our lovely street today, in broad daylight, right in front of our house. Were the keys in the ignition and the doors unlocked? Yep. Have we always done that when we knew we would be going back out shortly? Yep. Is that stupid in this day and age? Yep.
But in our defense, living in a community such as this spoils you to the point of stupidity.

me get these two sweaters out of my system! I have 4 projects in progress, about 30 rolling around in my head, and I can't get these two out of my mind... and don't forget about the Irish yarn and Rogue! Have I mentioned baby projects? We're having a population explosion in this family currently and I have to/want to knit for babies too! There definitely are not enough hours in the day to knit.
Maybe I can knit on vacaton... I don't know... I'm not much of a beach knitter. Does anyone like to knit on the beach? I just think sand and suntan lotion don't mix too well with yarn. I'm more of a beach reader than a beach knitter. In any case, Kiawah Island on Aug. 23rd and I CAN'T WAIT. This trip is my sister's birthday gift to me. This is a BIG birthday folks. I think this was my sister's way of keeping me from jumping off a bridge in a fit of depression over reaching the half century mark.
I took this photo just to make sure I could. My old camera wouldn't do a close up but this new one seems to work okay. This project is coming along. I love the colors. I don't think I'll have any problem getting it finished before Aug. 28th. You would think this would be boring but the pattern is addictive!

A quick critique... because I only have 15 minutes to leave for an appointment!
1. winsome eyelet pullover - Cute but I don't like bell sleeves. I wouldn't wear it and I wouldn't knit it.
2. circle cardigan - very creative and cute. Not me. I wouldn't wear it but I think it would be tons of fun to knit.
3. devil-may-care tie - there isn't much I like about that at all. Not the shape, not the color.. nope... nada.
4. Debbie Bliss cardigan - That is cute. But I don't like sweaters with a tie closure.
5. stunning gloves - stunning, yes. practical no. I think of gloves as being practical. I'd never wear them and I certainly wouldn't take the time to make them.
6. ankle brushing skirt - Way too big a project. Way, way too big. And I'd never wear it.
7. Bell sleeve pullover - what did I say about bell sleeves??
8. Sasha Kagan's top and hat - Love it. But it's too complicated for me and just something I would aspire to eventually ... but not anytime soon.
9. Purple sweater - LOVE IT! But I don't like the neck. Love the design, don't love the neck.
Did I mention I don't like the neck?
10. Orange cable cardigan - Love the sweater. I'd take the time to make this one. But not in orange.
11. red cable pullover - too... um.... trendy? I don't like the ruffled bottom or sleeve caps.
12. blue spiral cable pullover - there is not one thing I don't like about this. I'd wear it, I'd knit it, I'd buy that yarn to do it.
13. cascade 220 form fitting cardigan - someone pick me up off the floor. I think I fainted. It makes me want to lose more weight just to wear it. It's incredible. And I love Cascade 220.... especially when it occurs to me to buy enough of it for the entire project.
14. Chunky short cable cardigan... here again, love it, would wear it, would knit it, and I'd do it in that exact yarn. Sorry fiber snobs... but you have to admit... it looks great.
15. shawl - Well it reminds me of my failure: Michaela. I love it. It's fabulous. It would scare me after what I've been through with lace. Maybe ritalin would help.
16. Turkish cape - now that is just plain cute but I wouldn't go there. Too many color changes for me.
17. Rectangle wrap - just ho hum in my opinion. I'm not into fringey things.
18. Another lace shawl - I love it. I wish someone would make it for me so I wouldn't have to make it myself.

20. knit suit. - classy looking. I'd certainly never take the time to knit it and I probably wouldn't wear it once I did.... and wouldn't that JUST KILL YOU if you went to all that trouble?
21. black and white cardigan - this is so me it's scary. I have to talk myself out of buying black and white when I shop because I have a tendency to ONLY buy black and white. I think I'd be more inclined to buy a sweater like this than take the time to make it.
22. michael kors turtleneck - very nice. I'd wear it. My husband certainly wouldn't.
23. knit coat - awesome. I'd kill for that. (well, ok, I'm exaggerating) I just love it. But it's something I know I'd quit in the middle of. Big and boring knit.... but worth it in the end.
24. tiny tank - there's something about that that reminds me of Knitt.com's "W" that I have on hold right now. But I don't like that deep V on this one and I'd never wear it.
25. retro design vest thingy - wow... takes me back to high school. And that was LONG time ago. It's cute. I think my daughters would like it.
26 - seed stitch vest - I'm just not a vest person but that's cute.
27. slip stitch vest - very cute design, very cute. I wish I liked vests because that's one I'd do if I did.
28. checkerboard fair isle - another vest - cute, but not for me.
29. and 30. - sporty hoodies - They are just adorable. If I didn't work and had all the time in the world to knit, I'd do them for my daughters. I don't see that happening in this lifetime.
31. racer top - awww... that's adorable. I'd think about that for cate and kelly.
32. hooded pullover - love it. Love the design, love the color. It's so wearable. I'd make that.
33. - arm warmers. -they're kidding, right? arm warmers? really? arm warmers? I'd be laughing too if I had to model them.
I knit for about 5 hours on Clapotis II yesterday. A few more rows and I'll drop the first stitch. The colors are nice and should go with about anything solid. And speaking of Clapotis.... I have been in search of a beige Sheath dress to go with my green one for months now and I came across one on ebay about a week ago. It was my size, new, AKA Eddie Bauer, so I ordered it. It came on Saturday and I can't believe my good luck. It fits like a dream, looks like a dream, and it's exactly what I wanted. And are you ready for this???? It was $17.99!!!! It will be perfect for some functions that I have coming up in the near future. Things like that usually don't happen to me.
I was evaluating my yarn stash over the weekend. It's out of control. So, I am vowing NOT to buy any more yarn (except the Irish yarn for Rogue) until after I use up at least half of this stash. It's taking over my spare room AND my living room. There should be some sort of an organization to help people with this addiction.
Hi. My name is Holly and I'm addicted to yarn.
Wow I have nothing! I was tempted to do some stash enhancement just so I'd have something to talk about. But instead of buying yarn, today I broke down and bought a new DIGITAL CAMERA!!! yay!!! I can only hope that my future photos are much better than the previous ones. I stuck with Fuji. Got a good deal on a Fujifilm FinePix A345. I really liked my Fuji but it just wore out. I use it a lot for work and play and it's a dinosaur as far as technology goes these days. It is only a 1.3 megapixel! I was way overdue for a new one. I ordered it online at Circuit City but I can just stop at our local store on my way home from work and pick it up. It was neat because it was a "web only" special, would have been $20.00 more if I had gone to the store to purchase it, but I can pick it up at the store for the "web special" price after ordering it online.
I don't think I'll get much knitting accomplished this weekend either. My daughter and son in law are coming home and I'm babysitting the monster dog. (one year old golden retreiver with energy out the wazoo) All the kids and their significant others are trekking off to Kennywood tomorrow for some sibling bonding so it's just me, DH, and the dogs holding down the fort. Irish and Zoe are not too crazy about each other so it should be an interesting weekend.

progress on Clapotis II. I figured you really don't need to see a photo of clapotis with a few more rows on than the last photo, right? It's just a bigger "V" at this point. My husband's brother and his wife are visiting from Florida so there hasn't been much time to knit. And who feels like knitting when it's a gazillion degrees out anyhow? Holy Heck! Turn the heat off! I can't stand it. All I can say is Thank God for air conditioning. I don't know how people live without it in this heat.
I got my red Soleil back from the seamstress the other day. She re-did the thing a la Bonnie Marie (? was that the name?) It fits now but the shoulders look a little funky. I am so tempted to rip those things and do a kitchener closing. But with my luck I'd just make it even worse so I'll probably let it alone. It will sit in my drawer forever because I won't get rid of it since I made it but I'll probably never wear it because of the shoulder funkiness. (is that a word?)
Work has been Gawd-awful lately. One problem after another. From radon to roof problems and people bitching and moaning about anything and everything. It would be nice if I had the power to make everyone happy and agreeable to everything but it doesn't work that way. I think I was due for some rocky roads since things were going so smoothly for so long. It tends to go in cycles. In real estate, so much is out of the agent's control but who is the first person in the line of fire when something goes wrong? You got it. Moi. So why do I love it??? :-)
